H. Henry Li, MD, PhD

President, Chief Executive Officer, Laboratory Director

Dr. Li is a practicing allergist and immunologist and has a long-time interest in hereditary angioedema (HAE) and immunodeficiency research. He received his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Texas and completed his clinical fellowship training at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Li has developed his world-wise expertise in HAE over the years and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He also directs clinical trials at the Institute for Asthma & Allergy.

J. Joanna Yu, MD, PhD

Chief Operations Officer, General Laboratory Supervisor

Dr. Yu obtained her clinical fellowship training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and practiced endocrinology for more than 20 years. She also held a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Texas. Dr. Yu’s current interest is to translate laboratory research onto clinical diagnostic solutions to best serve healthcare providers and patients’ daily special needs.

Lili Wan, PhD

Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Lili Wan studied Biochemistry at Nanjing University in China and then at St. Michael’s College, VT, where she graduated magna cum laude. She received her PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and continued her work there for years. Her keen interest is in laboratory and translational research. She is currently the Director of Clinical Research at the Institute for Asthma & Allergy and in charge of clinical research at Virant Diagnostics.

Shaobin Hou, PhD

Chief Technical Officer

Dr. Shaobin Hou received his MS and PhD in Microbiology at the University of Hawaii and a biology degree at Nankai University. Dr. Hou also served as the Lead Scientist in the Genomic department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has multiple peer-review publications in the areas of molecular biology and microbiology.  His extensive bench research experience and sound grasp of modern laboratory technology has established a solid foundation for the development of various testing platforms at Virant Diagnostics. His spends his spare time reading and is an avid professional tennis fan and player.

Joseph Chiao, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Joe Chiao completed his Anatomical and Clinical Pathology residency at Jefferson University and completed his fellowships in Cytopathology and Clinical Microbiology at the University of Florida. He was a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Florida-Jacksonville prior to joining the Pharmaceutical industry where he worked in Medical Affairs and Clinical Research roles for drug and medical device development. His clinical and industry background is complementary in contributing to the expertise of the entire Virant Diagnostics laboratory staff in knowledge, function and excellence in execution. Joe’s hobbies and interests includes following Formula One Racing, the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Yankees and repairing vintage pinball machines.

Kusumam Joseph, PhD


Dr. Kusumam Joseph received her Doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Pune, India and her Nursing degree at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Caroline. She served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she was involved in the multiple funded applied research as the Principal Investigator. Her teaching responsibilities at MUSC included biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. She holds a US patent for an assay that determines the levels of plasma protease C1 inhibitor and has multiple peer reviewed scientific and medical journal publications. Her pharmaceutical industry roles include working in Medical Affairs, Clinical Development and Regulatory Affairs for companies such as BioCryst and Shire Pharmaceuticals (now Takeda). Dr. Joseph will be working on various complement and angioedema related in-vitro assays for Virant Diagnostics.

Baby George Tholanikunnel, PhD


Dr. Baby Tholanikunnel has worked as a scientist and researcher at Stony Brook University and the Medical University of South Carolina. He is an experienced Biochemist and Molecular Biologist and has received several research grants that include the American Heart Association and National Institute of Health during his academic tenures. He has more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals such as the “Journal of Biological Chemistry” and “Proceeding of the National Institute of Sciences, USA”, as well as several review articles and book chapters. At Virant Diagnostics, Dr. Tholanikunnel will head the complement and immunoassay sections. He enjoys gardening and hiking in his spare time.

Yunkou Wu, PhD

Executive Director, Toxicology & Proteomics

Dr. Yunkou Wu received his Doctorate Degree in Chemistry at Dalian University of Technology, China. His previous work experience includes at UT Southwestern as a Senior Research Scientist, at Howard University as an Assistant Professor in Department of Radiology and most recently at Johns Hopkins PET Radiotracer Center as a Chemist and Researcher. He has a long working history (>15 years) in translational research from preclinical drug development to clinical drug trials.  He has extensive experience in preclinical drug development, drug design and synthesis, radiosynthesis, polymer synthesis, cell culture and assays, in vitro & in vivo toxicology testing, and developing new PET drugs for IND applications. Dr. Yunkou Wu has multiple scientific peer-reviewed publications and has also served as an editorial board member and a peer reviewer to  evaluate pharmacology and toxicology results in many scientific papers. Dr. Wu will lead the department of toxicology and proteomics and will look to develop new preclinical and clinical diagnostic assays.
